How Much Do You Know About Your Feet?

July 30, 2024

Although we may take them for granted, our feet are complex and fascinating structures that perform the essential task of carrying us through our lives, one step at a time. The podiatrist at Mark Costopoulos, DPM is an expert at all things related to the health and function of the foot and ankle, and is dedicated to ensuring that every patient who walks into our office, walks out comfortably and confidently.

Today we’d like to share some fun facts about our feet, courtesy of the American Podiatric Medical Association.

  • Our feet have evolved over millions of years to support the ability to walk upright. Early humans had flatter feet with a more prominent arch, while today’s humans have higher arches that are better suited for shock absorption.
  • Adults take an average of around 8,000 to 10,000 steps daily, covering roughly 4 to 5 miles.
  • Our two feet contain a total of 52 bones and have more than 7,000 nerve endings, which explains why they’re so sensitive to touch, pressure, and temperature.
  • Look down at your bare feet. Notice that they are different sizes? You’re far from alone. It’s common for one foot to be slightly larger than the other. The APMA recommends that when buying shoes, always choose a size that fits the larger foot comfortably. Try finding a pair with adjustable straps or try an insole to accommodate the size difference.
  • Our feet can produce up to a pint of sweat each day, which is why they are prone to moisture-related conditions like athlete’s foot if not properly cared for.

There are few things as essential to our day-to-day lives as the ability to walk comfortably and confidently. Paying a visit to our doctor of podiatric medicine at Mark Costopoulos, DPM for a comprehensive, hands-on examination is the best way to ensure that you’re moving in the right direction!
